Past golden globe winners
Ever since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association established the awards in 1944, many great performances and achievements in motion picture and television have been honored with this prestigious award. In 1943, when Hollywood Foreign Press Association was founded by the correspondents of foreign publications who were reporting about the events and news pertaining to the entertainment industry and moving pictures in particular. The first awards were given in 1944, but there were no statuettes yet, because the design work was not finished. The very same year a competition took place for the best design, and that is when the famous Golden Globe was created, with the film strip around it, hovering on a pedestal. The first to receive an award by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were Paul Lukas, Best Actor and Jennifer Jones, Best Actress; the directing award went to Henry King for “The Song of Bernadette”, which took the Best Picture Award as well. Supporting Acting honors went to Akim Tamiroff and Katina Paxinou. The informal show took place in the 20th Century Fox studios and only scrolls were handed out. The first gala social event with a lavish banquet was held the very next year, at the 2nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, where the statuettes were given as well. The categories remained the same six honors, like in the first year. Ingrid Bergman and Alexander Knox took the Best Actors honors; supporting roles by Agnes Moorehead and Barry Fitzgerald were honored; Leo McCarey received the Globe for directing “Going My Way”, which was named Best Picture as well. The list of Golden Globe Award winners is long, it reads like the “Who is Who” of the history of Hollywood, also more sensitive choices for winners were taken, with roles the broad public could relate to, in comparison to the Academy Awards. For instance, Harrison Ford, perhaps the star with the strongest box office appeal, never received an Oscar. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded him a Cecil B. DeMille award, for outstanding contributions to the motion picture industry. Michael J. Fox was never even nominated for an Oscar, but has four Golden Globes. James Earl Jones never won an Academy Award, was nominated only once, but won a Golden Globe Award. Glenn Close was nominated five times for an Academy Award, never won one, but has two Globes. Although there were some eyebrows raised, when Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe, the annual award show is still extremely popular with the entertainment industry as well as with the broad public. Currently, the Golden Globes are considered very accurate predictions, who will be honored with an Academy Award, which verifies the importance and the professional aptitude of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members.
