Golden globe documentary
The Annual Golden Globe Awards are being held every year since the year 1944 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It is a lavish gala where the crme de la crme of Hollywood and the entertainment industry of the United States enjoy a fabulous banquet while deserving individuals are honored for their outstanding achievements in the motion pictures and television industries. Twenty five awards are given in just as many categories, plus a special award, the Cecil B. DeMille award, is given to one individual, honoring an outstanding individual’s life dedicated to this art form. Other than the Academy Awards, where honoring the Documentary Film achievements is a permanent fixture, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for whatever reason, decided to abandon the award in 1977. Since that the award was incorporated into the award ceremony in 1972, the durability of this category was extremely short. Just once before the 1972 ceremony an award was given to a documentary, which happened in 1954 for the “Best Documentary Film of Historical Interest”, the award was given to “A Queen Is Crowned”, the only full length color film of the coronation of the Queen Elizabeth II, narrated by Laurence Olivier. In the year 2003, Vikram Jayanti, a native New Yorker who lived and worked all over the world, did a revealing documentary about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, called “The Golden Globes: Hollywood’s Dirty Little Secret”, where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was exposed for being an exclusive little club of individuals with extreme power and financial control and whose members are not even active members of the press anymore. Journalists, producers, even some nominees, who were disguised in order not to be recognized, talk about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which counted in 2009 only ninety five individual members, revealing scandals and enormous power which is controlled by these individuals. Interestingly enough, this does not seem to be such a secret after all, at least not for Hollywood; it seems like everyone who matters in the entertainment industry is well aware of all the facts, they just don’t care. Why should the entertainment industry care that only 95 people decide who gets nominated and consequently who gets the awards? The whole ceremony is a great photo opportunity for all participants, it is even a better promotion vehicle for all productions and stars mentioned or shown on during the TV broadcast, there is a lavish banquet, then the follow up parties, the whole Hollywood elite gets a chance to rub elbows and to talk about future projects, and the public can gawk at their favorite stars.
