Golden globe nominees
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association exists for over sixty years, since 1943 to be exact, and already a year after established they presented the first awards to deserving individuals, who made exceptional contributions to the entertainment world. The first Golden Globe Awards did have no statuettes as of yet, they were created for the next, the second Awards, when a lavish gala social event and a star studded banquet were planned. The first awards were given in scrolls and only in six categories, all in the motion pictures, the television awards were introduced years later, at the 14th Golden Globe Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces the nominees generally a month before the announcement of the winners. An elaborate procedure takes place before that, in order to determine eligible participants for the nomination. Rules are public and available on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s website. In history, many people have taken steps to get at least nominated, behind closed doors there were even talks about bribery and corruption. This culminated in 1981, when an award was given to the starlet Pia Zadora after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members spent time in Las Vegas, catered lavishly by Zadora’s then husband, Meshulam Riklis. Nevertheless, the popularity of the Golden Globes is undiminished and Hollywood listens up when nominations are declared. Months before public relation people, producers and even actors lobby for nominations and it is known that some of the lobbying can be very fruitful. One actor who received an award died after being nominated, Peter Finch, he died two weeks before the ceremony and won posthumously. Heath Ledger was nominated and won the award for his portrayal of The Joker in the movie “The Dark Knight” after his death. The actress with most nominations is Meryl Streep, she received a total of twenty three nominations, whereby she won six times. The actor with most nominations is Jack Lemmon, he was nominated twenty two times and managed to win five Golden Globes, plus he received a Cecil B. DeMille award in 1991. Jack Nicholson was nominated sixteen times, but won six times and received additionally a Cecil B. DeMille award. Barbara Streisand was nominated seventeen times and won eight awards, including four Golden Globes and four Henrietta Awards, plus a Cecil B. DeMille award. While multiple nominations were not uncommon, winning two awards the same evening is very seldom. Only four actresses managed to accomplish this feat, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Plowright, Helen Mirren and most recently Kate Winslet. The nominees for the 67th Golden Globe Awards will be nominated in December 2009.
