Golden globe race
The race for the Golden Globe awards which happens annually and is actually the honoring of the exceptional achievements in motion pictures and television by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association should not be mistaken for the legendary Golden Globe race, which took place in the late sixties of the twentieth century. This yacht race, which happened in the years 1968 and 1969, was a nonstop challenge issued to individuals, where a trip around the world was to be made single handed by an individual within the given time frame. In order to be considered an entrant, all the person had to do is single handedly to sail around the world that year and let the sponsor of the race, the Sunday Times, know of the attempt. The Sunday Times was officially founded in 1864 in London. It was launched, however, as The New Observer some forty three years before that, changed name twice since then into The Independent Observer, to avoid being mixed up with the existing The Observer, and then into The Sunday Times, whereby there is no correlation between this publication and The Times. It is currently owned by News International, a Rupert Murdoch company. The Sunday Times has already sponsored the very popular and sensational single handed voyage around the world, actually a circumnavigation, done by Francis Chichester in 1966. When the plans for a race of circumnavigation enthusiasts was discussed and the plans for a successful implementation was taking form, The Sunday Times decided to, instead sponsoring a single entrant, sponsor the whole race. Since that it was impossible to have all the entrants start at one and the same time, two prizes were allocated, the Golden Globe trophy and a separate five thousand British pound cash award. There were several entrants in the race, but only two will be remembered, Donald Crowhurst and Robin Knox-Johnston. Donald Crowhurst, a businessman, entered the race because he wanted to win the award money and save his business with the cash. He saw no other way out of his financial perils, but to win the race, and when his boat and equipment started to fail him, he started to fake his progress. Unfortunately, the pressure and the physical demands were too much for him, he went insane and committed suicide during the race. Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one of all entrants to finish the race and wound up collecting both prizes. As a true gentleman, he took the prize money and donated it to the family of the poor Donald Crowhurst. It took him 313 days to circumnavigate the Globe.
