Golden globe predictions
Predicting who will win one of the Golden Globe awards is not only something you can bet on in Las Vegas, but also a very interesting game, played by almost every single entertainment related publication. Most of the time, it is not easy to foresee who will be the winner. After the nominations are published, the chances are at 20% to get it right per category and sometimes the odds are a bit in favor of certain individuals or a production, because the lobbying was either that strong that nothing else was able to get into pertinent publications, or the work was that exceptional, there was almost no doubt. At the 66th Annual Golden Globes Awards, the case was very clear for two people, two actors who performed exceptionally and in addition were able to impress not only the press, but the broad public in every possible way. Mickey Rourke played a role in “The Wrestler” which was immensely powerful, not only because it reflected so much from Rourke’s own life, but because the director, Darren Aronofsky, allowed him to truly shine. It did not hurt that the supporting cast was stellar as well. The other actor is Heath Ledger for his performance as The Joker in the latest installment of the Batman franchise, “The Dark Knight”. Ledger died tragically, even before “The Dark Knight” hit the theatres and became the biggest box office success of the year and got nominated and won posthumously. But most of the time, there is no knowing who would win, speculations go into extremes and the public relations machinery spews many ludicrous predictions trying to lobby for their assigned stars and productions. There were some brows raising decisions by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, where members decided that “Vicky Christina Barcelona” by Woody Allen, which barely made profit at the box office, but was critically acclaimed in the United States, was more deserving of an award then the huge blockbuster “Mamma Mia” which earned almost a billion dollars and went on to become the most successful movie in the UK of all time. The so called ABBA musical was extremely popular outside of the United States, making the decision of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which should actually display the foreign press and the target audiences tastes and not the local critic’s opinions, if not the local public taste. “Mamma Mia” earned in the United States seven times more than “Vicky Christina Barcelona”, and the worldwide gross of “Mamma Mia” would dwarf the lifetime gross of all Woody Allen motion pictures combined.
