The Golden Globe Awards have been televised ever since the sixties. Although the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was founded in 1943 the television broadcasts did not start up until some twenty years later. NBC, the National Broadcasting Company, decided to air the awards show as a part of the already established “The Andy Williams Show”. The first transmission did not go flawlessly; there were awkward cuts to the commercials, one even cutting Shirley MacLaine off in the middle of her acceptance speech. She was awarded for her portrayal of “Irma La Douce” a prostitute in the movie with the same name; her co-star Jack Lemmon was nominated as well, but did not win. NBC continued to broadcast the Golden Globes for years later, but other networks did compete for the broadcasting rights, taking over for other parts of the world, like HBO did for a while. HBO is a very popular network, it is short for Home Box Office and has won plenty off accolades for their programming. Some of the series which were produced by the HBO went on to become multiple Golden Globe winners and provided their stars with many awards and nominations. The most prolific and acclaimed series were The Sopranos, which won a Golden Globe in the category Best Drama; Sex and the City, which was nominated for twenty four Golden Globe Awards and won eight, some for the show, some for lead actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall; Entourage, which was nominated eleven times, but won only one, Jeremy Piven won the Best Supporting Actor award; Deadwood, which won a Golden Globe for the actor Ian McShane; and Band Of Brothers, the very acclaimed World War II miniseries co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, which also won a Golden Globe in the Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television category; but these are just a fraction of the wide variety HBO offers. Home Box Office was founded by Charles Dolan, of the cablevision fame, who had die idea of a “Green Channel”, which would use underground wiring cable system to get to the consumer, instead of the regular transmission methods. Time Life invested in this idea and the whole project became, after years of development and implementation, HBO, the Home Box Office, in 1972. The company name was Sterling Manhattan Cable and managed to get twenty thousand subscribers, but was losing money despite the popularity. About a year later, Time Life, Inc. took over and acquired the whole lot, expanding later to satellite transmissions and additional channels, such as Cinemax.
