Golden globe red carpet
Ever since the Annual Golden Globe Awards became a lavish social gala with a distinguished banquet, featuring the crme de la crme of Hollywood, the international public has expressed interest in this event and the participants. Besides the popular TV transmission of the whole happening, the organizing Hollywood Foreign Press Association has to give the opportunity for domestic and international colleagues to get their snapshots and interviews with the attending celebrities. That is why the red carpet is an unavoidable part of this affair, providing the attendees with a photo opportunity, the fashion designers with an outlet for their best creations, the jewelers for a rare public relation stint, the public with a glimpse of fame. The presumably initial reference to a red carpet and the associated grandeur can be found in literature, Aeschylus wrote a play in 458 BC, where he wrote about Agamemnon returning from Troy and his wife laid out a red carpet for his triumphant return, and he remained reluctant to walk on the “tinted splendor” meant for Gods. Sometimes the entertainment industry is really taking themselves too seriously. Although entertainment has always seemed indispensible to humans; panem et circenses, said Juvenal, criticizing the Romans, “Bread and Circuses”, translated, condemning the emperors for using cheap techniques to distract the masses from their own misdeeds; so nowadays Hollywood grew into this incontrollable self-congratulatory behemoth, being a greater distraction than ever from the perils of the daily life and the misdeeds of the rich and greedy, predominantly politicians and currently the Wall Street moguls as well. Is the world being presented with a giant dancing bear, in order to take the current economic crisis as a given fact? If the whole world is running out of money, where did the money go? Are the Golden Globes a picture of the Golden Cow the Israelites made for themselves, because the Glory of God was incomprehensible to them? Be it as may, the red carpet looks good on photographs and all the smiling celebrity faces seem to assure all of us that everything is going to be alright. Golden Globes are presenting a golden Earth, perhaps a golden future, only it seems that red carpets are the way to reach that destination, from the Pope to the President, from the Golden Globes to the World Trade Organization, red carpets are everywhere, only not there where the common man is walking. I guess some people have ensnared the path of Gods and barred the way for others. All we can do is stare at their smiling faces and believe that all will be good.
