Golden globe winners
The Golden Globe Awards show is held annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, where in 25 categories outstanding achievement in Film and Television is being awarded. Besides the Golden Globes statuettes, a Cecil B. DeMille Award is given to individuals who have provided outstanding contributions to the entertainment world. It is generally accepted that recipients of Golden Globes become frontrunners for the popular Oscars, actually named the Academy Awards, given out a couple of weeks later by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first ever Golden Globe winners were declared at an informal ceremony, held at the 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California, in 1944. At that time there were no statuettes designed yet, the winners received scrolls. The movie “The Song of Bernadette” won best film, the lead actress, Jennifer Jones won for her role in that movie as well, and Paul Lukas was presented with the Best Actor award. The first formal banquet, held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1945, where the newly designed statuettes featuring the golden globe with a film strip surrounding it were given out, was the first official gala social event. “Going My Way”, a Bing Crosby “feel good” vehicle with music numbers, won the Best Picture award, while Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress for “The Bells of St. Mary’s”, another movie featuring Bing Crosby in the same Father Chuck O’Malley role. Interestingly enough, Bing Crosby did not win the Golden Globe, but went on to win the Oscar, that year’s Globe went to Alexander Knox for his portrayal of President Woodrow Wilson in the historical drama “Wilson”. Since then, many performers have won the award for various achievements, whereby the actors and actresses with most wins are Angela Lansbury, who won the first Golden Globe in 1946 for her role in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and four times for her portrayal of Jessica Fletcher in the long running TV – Series “Murder, She Wrote”; Meryl Streep, who won for both television and motion picture work, and has the honor of most nominations for a Golden Globe, twenty three in total; and Jack Nicholson, who in addition to his Globes won also the Cecil B. DeMille Award. All of the aforementioned performers won six Golden Globes. If all the special awards would be counted as well, like the Henrietta Award, then Barbara Streisand with eleven wins in total would lead the poll. The only disruption in the annual tradition of Golden Globe Award ceremonies happened in 2008, when Writer’s Guild of America strike forced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to only hold a press conference to announce the winners.
