Golden globe nominations
The nominations for the prestigious Golden Globe Awards are generally announced a month in advance to the actual presentation show or that year’s winners. For the Golden Globe Awards ceremony which was held on the 11th of January 2009, the nominees were presented to the press on the 11th of December 2008. The selection procedure for the nominees is as follows: There are strict guidelines which motion pictures and television programs are eligible for consideration. The nomination ballot with all eligible entries is submitted to all members, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association selects five nominees in each category and submits the completed ballot to be computed. After the nominees have been computed, the final ballot is sent to the members, containing the five selected nominees with the most votes in each category. The final vote is also being computed and the winners presented at the awards gala. Because of a mistake by an employee who maintains the web site, it was published who is in charge of the computation. The eminent accounting firm Ernst & Young, LLP was in charge of computing the nominees and the final winners, where only four executives in the company were informed about all the nominees and winners before the announcements have been done. These four executives vouch and are responsible that no one, not even the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association know who the nominees are before the official announcement, or who the winners are, before the envelopes were opened on the Golden Globe Awards gala presentation night. Currently there are twenty five categories in which five nominees compete for the prestigious award; all together up to one hundred and twenty five potential winners may hope that this year is their year of glory. The Cecil B. DeMille award winner is announced in advance; this prestigious award is given to unique individuals who have provided outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment and the motion picture industry in particular. The first person to be honored by this award was Cecil B. DeMille, the legendary director, himself, that is why this award bears his name. Past winners of the award read like the “who is who” of the motion picture industry, honored were directors like recently Steven Spielberg and actors, like Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston and Gregory Peck, as well as actresses, like Doris Day, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. Studio owners and producers were honored as well, like Walt Disney, Samuel Goldwyn and Hal B. Wallis. The winner is determined by the board of directors of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The Samsung LA46A950 is without a doubt the best LCD television we’ve seen up until this point and proof that the technology has some fire left in it yet.
Design of the zooom
Television design has been getting a little silly of late, what with the LG Scarlet’s “love hole” and the Sony ZX1′s wall-mount bracket in a fetching, scratchy piano-black that no-one will ever see, zooom so it’s refreshing to find a TV as understated as Samsung’s Series 9. After all, people visit the Louvre for the pictures, not the frames.
But that’s not to say that design has come last in the construction of this TV — it’s actually quite a stunner, with a faux-carbon fibre finish and a clear plastic trim. While it’s not as slim as the Samsung Series 8, it’s certainly sturdier with a solid, non-swivelling glass stand.
Our only gripe is with the on-board controls, they are impossible to see under most lighting conditions. Unless you have a light shining directly on them — which is a no-no for television viewing — you won’t be able to find them. They are of the capacitive type, but will light up when you … erm, rub the area.
